What does diversification actually mean?
Diversification spreads exposure across investments and sources of risk. It is not simply the number of holdings, and it cannot guarantee a profit or prevent losses.
Two funds may hold different securities while depending on the same broad equity market. Conversely, investments with different economic exposures can behave differently under the same conditions. The useful question is not only “How many investments do I own?” but “What risks do they share?”
Why do dollars and risk tell different stories?
Portfolio risk depends on each investment’s volatility, its weight and its relationship with the other holdings. Dollar weights alone do not capture those interactions.
Two different ways to understand a portfolio
Capital allocation
Where the dollars sit
Investment weights describe how capital is distributed among holdings.
Risk contribution
What drives the outcome
Weights, volatility and correlations together shape portfolio risk.
Conceptual explanation, not measured portfolio data. Different holdings may share the same economic risks. Diversification does not ensure a profit or protect against loss.
Does adding investments always help?
Adding a genuinely different exposure may reduce some concentration. Adding more of a similar exposure may have diminishing benefits. In an equal-weight, equal-volatility mathematical model, the relationship between streams has a large effect on the result.
The model on our Strategy page makes those assumptions visible. It is not an investment simulation or prediction. Actual portfolios involve changing correlations, taxes, fees, trading constraints, illiquidity and other risks that a simple model does not capture.

- Which investments drive most of the portfolio’s risk?
- Which holdings could fall together in a stressed market?
- What assumptions about correlations are built into the allocation?
- How much liquidity is available when it is needed?
- How do costs, taxes and investment restrictions affect the design?
A disciplined starting point
Gulfstream’s investment philosophy emphasizes risk-aware portfolio construction across public, private and alternative markets. The objective is a portfolio suited to the client, rather than a fixed collection of products.
