Colorado IAR CE: home state and missed-year balances
Colorado’s first IAR CE year was 2024. An adviser registered in Colorado should check the Colorado obligation even when the adviser’s home state does not require CE.
Does living outside Colorado remove the requirement?
The Colorado Division of Securities presentation explains that the program covers state-registered and federal covered IARs, including Colorado registrants whose home state has no CE requirement. A home address alone does not answer the applicability question. Give your firm the full registration list and principal-office information.
What credits belong in the annual plan?
The annual framework is six Ethics and Professional Responsibility credits and six Products and Practice credits. Confirm your first reporting year and any recognized FINRA or designation credit before deciding how much remains. Holding a professional designation is not itself proof that a particular course earns IAR CE.
Compare the provider and Course ID with the approved listing. Similar titles, a changed marketing label or a certificate for another credential are not enough to settle repeat-credit or category eligibility.
Keep an older deficiency separate from this year
Colorado’s guidance explains that making up a missed year does not replace the current year’s requirement. A renewal transaction is a separate administrative step. Ask your firm to reconcile the registration status and the CE record rather than relying on one successful payment or a single total of hours.
Review each reporting year in FinPro, retain completion evidence and check the provider’s report. The renewal-processing guide distinguishes course timing from reporting and processing; leave time to investigate a mismatch.
Planning example: two columns, not one total
Fictional planning example. A Colorado registrant working from a non-CE state sees an older Ethics balance and a current-year requirement. The adviser lists both years separately and asks which requirement each recorded completion satisfies. The fact that the home state does not require CE is recorded as context, not used to delete the Colorado balance.
For the compliance discussion, bring the registration dates, the two category balances for each year, prior Course IDs and any FINRA-credit documentation. Leave the course list open until the firm confirms which items are actually outstanding.
Select courses for the confirmed gaps
Use the FinPro selection guide to compare the record with Gulfstream’s course categories. If only one category remains, do not assume a two-course purchase is necessary. Review the individual topic overviews and samples, and resolve registration or credit-recognition questions before enrollment.
Quick answers
Do Colorado IAR CE rules apply if my home state has no CE?
Colorado guidance includes Colorado registrants whose home state does not require IAR CE. Confirm your individual registration and reporting year with your firm.
When did Colorado IAR CE begin?
Colorado’s first CE year was 2024. Your own first reporting year still depends on your registration history.
Does making up an old year replace this year’s CE?
No. Keep the missed-year requirement and current-year requirement separate when reconciling the transcript.
Should I buy twelve credits before checking FinPro?
First check the recorded category balances, prior Course IDs and any recognized overlapping credit. Purchase only after the remaining requirement is clear.
