Florida IAR CE: associated persons and home-state credit

Florida’s first IAR CE year was 2024. Florida law uses “associated person” for the individuals covered by its investment-adviser continuing education provision.

Which Florida registration should I check?

Florida Statutes section 517.1214 addresses associated persons of investment advisers and federal covered advisers. The standard annual requirement is twelve hours, divided between six Ethics and Professional Responsibility and six Products and Practice hours. Confirm that the individual registration and reporting year shown in your record fall within the provision.

How does the home-state alternative work?

Florida’s provision recognizes a home-state alternative when that state requires at least twelve hours annually and the associated person complies with it. Do not substitute a residence address for the statutory home-state analysis or assume that compliance in any state automatically settles Florida’s requirement.

Make a short cross-state record: principal office, each registration, first reporting year, the home-state program relied on and evidence of completion. Ask your compliance team to resolve any mismatch before choosing courses.

Separate overlapping CE from registration renewal

Section 517.1214 addresses conditional recognition for qualifying FINRA CE and approved credentialing-organization CE. Check the exact conditions and course approval instead of relying on the name of a designation. The Office of Financial Regulation compliance guidance identifies December 31, 2024 as the first completion deadline; that historical date is not a 2026 processing cutoff.

Use the current CE timing guide and your firm’s renewal instructions. A paid renewal, a purchased class, a passed course and an accepted transcript entry are separate events.

Planning example: a designation certificate and two registrations

Fictional planning example. An associated person has a professional-designation certificate and registrations in Florida and another state. Before treating the certificate as IAR credit, the person records the provider, exact Course ID, category and completion date. The firm checks the approval and any home-state recognition; the learner then compares the result with FinPro.

If the transcript and certificate differ, send a specific reporting question to the provider rather than immediately purchasing a duplicate. Keep client information out of that question.

Choose the remaining category and subject

After the firm confirms the requirement, use FinPro balances and prior IDs to narrow the course catalog. Select a subject that supports your work, then read its topic overview and sample. A convenient bundle is not a determination that both courses are needed or that designation credit is available.

Quick answers

What term does Florida use for IARs in its CE law?

Section 517.1214 addresses associated persons of investment advisers and federal covered advisers. Match that terminology to your individual registration.

When did Florida IAR CE begin?

The first compliance year was 2024, with the initial completion deadline on December 31, 2024.

Does completing another state’s CE always satisfy Florida?

No. Florida’s home-state alternative has conditions, including at least twelve annual hours and actual compliance with that home-state requirement.

Does a professional designation automatically provide IAR CE?

No. Confirm the applicable credential conditions and approval of the exact course and content before relying on overlapping credit.
