Kentucky IAR CE: individual registration and course format

Kentucky’s IAR CE requirement began in 2023. Start with the individual’s registration: a firm’s notice filing does not establish that every person at the firm owes Kentucky CE.

Does my firm’s Kentucky filing mean I need CE?

The Kentucky DFI FAQ distinguishes the representative’s registration from the firm’s notice filing. KRS 292.338 sets out the annual requirement: six Ethics and Professional Responsibility credits, including at least three ethics hours, and six Products and Practice credits. Confirm your own first reporting period rather than applying a firm-wide assumption.

Check the exact approval and delivery format

The statute recognizes approved IAR content and qualifying overlapping CE under specified conditions. It does not make a designation certificate a blanket exemption. Kentucky’s older posted FAQ also uses restrictive wording about self-study. Before selecting an independent-reading course, confirm current format acceptance with DFI for the exact approved Course ID; this guide does not resolve that format question.

Bring the course title, delivery method, provider and Course ID to the inquiry. Ask separately whether it qualifies for IAR CE and whether it also meets a designation requirement. Do not assume that one approval establishes both.

Reconcile missed years and renewal separately

The statute prohibits carrying excess credits into later periods and provides for CE inactive status when required CE is not completed and reported. The DFI FAQ explains that missed credits are additional to the next year’s requirement. FINRA Products and Practice recognition and home-state recognition are conditional, not automatic deductions from a transcript balance.

Keep a reporting-year worksheet beside the firm’s registration-renewal checklist. Use the current timing guide and allow time for reporting questions before a deadline; an old FAQ’s processing description is not a guarantee of a provider’s current turnaround.

Planning example: firm filing versus individual registration

Fictional planning example. A federally registered firm files notice in Kentucky and distributes a CE reminder to its staff. One employee first verifies whether the employee is individually registered in Kentucky or another CE jurisdiction. Only then does the employee review the applicable reporting year, format acceptance and remaining categories with compliance.

The review record lists the registration status, any older shortfall, prior Course IDs and the answer to the format question. The employee does not purchase courses merely because the firm sent a general reminder.

Compare courses only after the open questions are answered

Once applicability and format are confirmed, compare the FinPro transcript with the course facts and samples. If an approved source of overlapping credit has already satisfied one category, check the remaining category before considering a bundle. Keep the regulator’s or firm’s determination with the selection record.

Quick answers

Does a firm notice filing make every employee subject to Kentucky CE?

No. DFI’s FAQ bases the CE requirement on the representative’s registration, rather than the firm’s notice filing alone.

Does a professional designation automatically exempt a Kentucky IAR?

No. Check the statutory conditions and approval of the particular CE content before relying on designation coursework.

Can I assume an independent-reading course is accepted in Kentucky?

Confirm current format acceptance with DFI for the exact Course ID. The older posted FAQ contains self-study wording that this guide does not resolve.

Do missed Kentucky credits replace the next year’s requirement?

No. The DFI FAQ explains that missed credits must be addressed in addition to the next year’s requirement.
