Maryland IAR CE: returning after a registration gap
Maryland’s IAR CE program began in 2022. A registration gap can create additional questions beyond this year’s courses. Check prior reporting periods and the rules for re-registration before choosing a course bundle.
Check the unregistered period
COMAR 02.02.05.14H(9) requires a previously registered Maryland IAR applying again to complete CE for reporting periods during the unregistered interval, unless the person passes the examination required by section C or receives an examination waiver under section G. Ask the regulator which route applies; buying courses does not resolve the registration decision.
Understand a CE inactive record
Under section H(6), failure to complete or report required CE leads to CE inactive status. A person who otherwise qualifies may renew for that initial year, but remaining CE inactive at the close of the next calendar year makes the person ineligible for registration or renewal. Clearing the status requires completion and reporting for all required periods.
Prepare a record for your firm
Before asking for a course recommendation, list registration and withdrawal dates, each reporting year shown in FinPro, previous Course IDs and unresolved provider reports. Keep questions about examination eligibility and waivers separate from questions about missing course reports.
For example, a returning adviser may see a current-year balance and an earlier unresolved period. Start with the timeline and the regulator’s determination, then use the FinPro guide to organize the remaining categories. Do not infer the number of courses needed from the length of the registration gap alone.
Choose only after the reporting years are clear
The Maryland compliance guide describes the annual split: six Ethics and Professional Responsibility credits, including at least three on ethics, and six Products and Practice credits. Compare that requirement with your individual record, firm guidance and the published course facts.
Quick answers
Can a returning IAR assume only this year matters?
No. Maryland’s rule specifically addresses CE for periods when a previously registered applicant was unregistered.
Does purchasing a course restore registration?
No. A course purchase is not a determination of registration eligibility. Resolve that question with your regulator and firm.
What should I assemble before asking for help?
Prepare a registration timeline, FinPro reporting-year balances, previous Course IDs and the status of any missing completion reports.
