Michigan IAR CE: two checks before renewal

Michigan’s IAR CE program began in 2023. Course completion and registration-renewal payment are separate checks. Review both with your firm, and compare Course IDs before repeating a familiar topic.

Keep CE and renewal payment separate

Michigan LARA’s IAR guidance requires twelve annual credits, split evenly between Ethics and Professional Responsibility and Products and Practice. It also describes renewal payments through CRD/IARD. Paying the registration renewal fee does not cure missing CE; completing CE does not replace the firm’s renewal-payment process.

A familiar title can hide a repeated course

LARA says the same course cannot earn credit more than once; an updated course with a new number is the exception it describes. Compare the actual Course ID with prior records, not just the title, provider or a year-like label.

Use a two-part review with your firm

In one column, record each CE category balance, previous Course IDs and any missing provider report. In a second column, record the firm’s confirmation of the registration-renewal process. Keeping these questions separate makes it easier to identify who needs to resolve an outstanding item.

Suppose you passed a course but FinPro still shows a shortfall. Keep the completion evidence and ask about its report before buying a replacement. Conversely, a completed transcript is not a receipt for a registration renewal payment. Use the FinPro course-selection guide for reporting questions and the current renewal-processing guide for CE timing.

Compare subject matter after checking the record

Gulfstream offers two Ethics courses and two Products and Practice courses. Their detail pages explain the different topic emphasis and link to free samples. Choose according to the category still needed, prior IDs and your learning goals; a paired purchase is not an individualized CE determination.

Quick answers

Does a renewal payment satisfy missing CE?

No. Michigan’s guidance treats renewal payments and CE requirements as separate obligations.

Does a different title establish repeat-credit eligibility?

No. Check the course number. LARA describes an updated course with a new number as the exception to its no-repeat rule.

Where should I start if a passed course is missing?

Keep the completion evidence and use the FinPro guide to prepare a reporting-status question for the provider and your firm.
