Minnesota IAR CE: active registration versus exam validity
Minnesota’s first IAR CE year was 2025. Its investment-adviser resources discuss both active-registration CE and an optional examination-validity program; those are separate planning decisions.
Which Minnesota requirement are you trying to meet?
Minnesota Commerce’s investment-adviser guidance identifies annual IAR CE for representatives of state-registered and federal covered firms. It describes twelve credits split equally between Products and Practice and Ethics and Professional Responsibility. Confirm the individual registration and reporting year before applying that annual framework to your record.
Do not confuse active CE with EVEP
The same official resource describes the optional Examination Validity Extension Program, or EVEP, for eligible people after registration ends. Participation has its own conditions. This guide does not determine EVEP eligibility or list unverified enrollment conditions. Ask Commerce and your firm which active-registration, exam-validity and re-entry requirements apply to your circumstances.
Keep the question about preserving an examination separate from the question about this year’s IAR CE. A course purchase is not an election into a regulatory program or confirmation of a person’s registration status.
Review renewal and reported credit separately
Commerce identifies annual registration renewal through CRD/IARD. Keep the firm’s renewal confirmation beside, rather than in place of, your FinPro category balances. Compare previous Course IDs and ask about missing provider reports before purchasing more coursework.
If FINRA or designation CE could overlap, ask what is recognized for the particular obligation and how it is reported. Do not assume that a designation certificate, a FINRA completion or an exam-validity payment automatically clears every IAR category. Use the current timing guide for reporting and processing considerations.
Planning example: leaving a firm without a settled return date
Fictional planning example. A Minnesota adviser expects to leave a firm and asks whether CE can preserve examination eligibility. The adviser first reconciles active-registration CE through the relevant reporting year, then asks Commerce about the separate exam-validity decision. The worksheet records registration termination, completed Course IDs and the specific program question instead of merging them into one “renewal” task.
Before enrolling in a class, establish whether it is being considered for an active IAR balance, an exam-validity program or voluntary learning. The answer determines which instructions and approvals should be checked.
Choose courses for a confirmed purpose
For an established IAR CE obligation, use the FinPro selection guide and published course facts. Check prior IDs and the category still needed, then read a sample for learning fit. For an unresolved EVEP or re-entry question, obtain the regulator’s guidance before treating a course as the solution.
Quick answers
When did Minnesota IAR CE begin?
Minnesota Commerce and NASAA identify 2025 as the first IAR CE year.
Is EVEP the same thing as annual CE for active IAR registration?
No. Minnesota Commerce describes an optional examination-validity program with its own conditions. Confirm which obligation you are addressing.
Does buying a CE course enroll me in EVEP?
No. Course purchase and regulatory-program enrollment are separate actions. Check Commerce’s instructions and your eligibility.
What should I check before buying Minnesota IAR CE?
Confirm the reporting year, category balances, prior Course IDs and any recognized overlapping credit, then verify the exact course approval.
