North Dakota IAR CE: reconcile the year and course record
North Dakota’s first IAR CE year was 2024. Establish your own reporting year and remaining category balances before using a course package as an annual plan.
Which North Dakota sources should I use?
NASAA identifies North Dakota as a 2024 adopter. The state’s investment-adviser and IAR guidebook addresses the CE program and its implementing order. For a current copy or an individual interpretation, start with the North Dakota securities regulator. Do not treat a changed document link as evidence that a requirement has disappeared.
Confirm applicability before counting credits
The standard IAR CE split is six Ethics and Professional Responsibility and six Products and Practice credits. Ask your firm to confirm your individual registration, first reporting year and any outstanding period from another CE jurisdiction. A home address or the firm’s federal registration alone does not settle that inquiry.
This guide does not assert a North Dakota-specific waiver. For FINRA, designation or home-state credit recognition, obtain the applicable conditions and compare the result with the actual transcript before reducing the course plan.
Use four checkpoints: purchase, completion, report, credit
Keep the course receipt for the purchase, completion evidence for the learning, the provider’s response for reporting questions and FinPro for the recorded year and category. If one checkpoint is missing, ask a focused question before buying a replacement course.
Review the firm’s registration renewal separately. For 2026, consult the current reporting and processing guide and confirm any local deadline with the regulator. A guidebook publication date or order-adoption date is not a provider’s submission cutoff.
Planning example: a familiar topic with an old Course ID
Fictional planning example. A North Dakota adviser finds an attractive course title and then discovers its Course ID already appears in an earlier transcript year. Before purchasing, the adviser asks whether the offered course actually has a new approved ID and whether the intended category still has a balance. Marketing wording is not used as proof of repeat-credit eligibility.
The review record includes the old ID, current offering ID, category, provider and unanswered recognition questions. If a past completion is missing from FinPro, investigate the report instead of treating the empty display as permission to repeat the course.
Compare learning after the record is clear
The FinPro selection guide helps turn the reconciled record into a shortlist. Compare course topics and samples only after applicability and category need are established. Keep any unresolved regulator question separate from a provider’s explanation of course content.
