Wisconsin IAR CE: when to start
Wisconsin’s IAR CE requirement began in 2023. The annual split is six Ethics and Professional Responsibility credits and six Products and Practice credits. First-time registration and home-state compliance can affect your plan.
New to Wisconsin, or new to IAR CE?
Wisconsin DFI guidance distinguishes a first registration in a CE state from adding Wisconsin when you already have a CE obligation. With no existing CE requirement, first registration in a CE state starts the obligation the next calendar year. Adding Wisconsin does not postpone an existing requirement.
For example, an adviser first entering any CE state through Wisconsin during 2026 should confirm a 2027 first reporting year. An adviser already subject to CE elsewhere should review the existing 2026 balance.
Registered in more than one state?
Wisconsin recognizes home-state compliance when the home state’s CE requirements are at least as stringent and the IAR complies with them. DFI defines the home state by the principal office and place of business. Ask your firm to check both conditions; do not infer recognition from a mailing address.
Use the state requirements hub to check other effective years, then confirm the applicable rules with each regulator.
Choose courses after checking your record
Write down the reporting year and remaining credits in each category. If your record shows an older shortfall or pending completion, resolve that before buying a replacement. The FinPro guide walks through these cases and links to course details.
Read the current renewal-processing guide when planning completion and reporting. Gulfstream’s catalog and purchase terms explain course eligibility and access; buying a course does not determine your registration status.
Quick answers
Does adding Wisconsin reset an existing CE obligation?
No. Wisconsin DFI says an IAR already registered in a CE state must continue that year’s CE schedule.
Does Wisconsin accept any other state’s CE automatically?
No. DFI’s home-state recognition has conditions; have your firm confirm they apply to your registration.
Where should I check what remains before buying?
Use your FinPro transcript and your firm’s guidance. Compare the category, reporting year and prior Course IDs with the course details.
