Washington state IAR CE: prepare for the 2027 start
Washington state’s first IAR CE year is 2027. Its inclusion among adopting jurisdictions does not create a Washington-state CE requirement for 2026.
Which dates matter for Washington state?
The Washington Department of Financial Institutions rulemaking docket identifies adopted rule amendments effective November 21, 2026, with CE accrual beginning January 1, 2027 and first reporting in December 2027. Keep rule effectiveness and the first CE reporting year separate in the compliance calendar.
Do you have an existing obligation elsewhere?
An adviser already registered in another CE jurisdiction should still check that jurisdiction’s 2026 requirement. Washington’s 2027 start does not erase an earlier obligation or deficiency. Washington, DC is a separate jurisdiction with a 2023 start; verify which registration the record actually names.
Prepare the record before choosing 2027 courses
Use the common IAR CE framework of six Ethics and Professional Responsibility and six Products and Practice credits as a planning reference. Confirm the application of the adopted Washington rule to your registration and first reporting period with DFI and your firm. Check any FINRA, designation or home-state recognition question against the final requirements before counting it.
Save prior Course IDs and FinPro reporting-year balances. Do not assume a 2026 completion can be assigned to the 2027 obligation. A course’s availability now is not evidence of its eligibility for a particular reporting year.
Planning example: Washington registration plus an older CE state
Fictional planning example. An adviser is registered in Washington state and a jurisdiction whose CE program is already active. The adviser maintains a current-year checklist for that existing obligation and a separate 2027 preparation list for Washington. The adviser checks prior IDs so that next year’s course selection does not accidentally repeat a completed course.
The preparation list contains registration dates, remaining questions about recognition, the course approval to verify at enrollment and a reminder to check the regulator’s reporting instructions. It does not assume that buying early satisfies the later reporting year.
Keep 2026 and 2027 timing guidance distinct
The existing 2026 reporting guide concerns the current renewal-processing cycle; it is not a 2027 submission deadline. Confirm the 2027 instructions when planning Washington completions. After applicability is established, use the FinPro guide and course details and samples to compare the category needed. The Indiana guide also covers a 2027 start with existing obligations kept separate.
Quick answers
Does Washington state require IAR CE for 2026?
Its first CE year is 2027. Existing requirements in another jurisdiction may still apply for 2026.
Is Washington state the same as Washington, DC for IAR CE?
No. Washington state begins in 2027; the District of Columbia began in 2023.
When does Washington’s first CE reporting occur?
DFI’s adopted-rule docket identifies CE accrual beginning January 1, 2027 and first reporting in December 2027. Confirm the applicable submission instructions.
Can I assume a course completed in 2026 covers Washington’s 2027 need?
No. Verify reporting-year eligibility before relying on an early completion, and keep any existing 2026 obligation separate.
